This small gap allows the Essential Bed to work on mildly uneven surfaces. The Essential Bed + Pillowboard has a height of 33" from the bottom of the frame to the top of the Pillowboard.

What’s the difference between the Essential Bed and the Classic Bed?

Both the Essential Bed and the Classic Bed are crafted from solid, upcycled rubberwood and made with Japanese joinery for a strong, noise-minimizing frame. Both feature minutes-only, no-tool assembly, but the Essential Bed features even fewer pieces and quicker set-up. Both are GREENGUARD Gold certified for cleaner indoor air. Both are offered in four premium finishes and can be paired with Pillowboard. The biggest difference is aesthetic. The Essential Bed’s low profile offers a grounded, minimalist look. It sits 11” in height, with a continuous platform design that is nearly flush against the floor. Hidden Japanese joinery and subtle curves provide a smooth appearance and a quicker set-up. The Classic Bed sits 13" in height with 9" of clearance below. Thoughtful design details include tapered legs and exposed Japanese joinery. In addition to the Pillowboard, the Classic Bed can be paired with the Classic Headboard to create a more expressive centerpiece. The Classic Bed is also compatible with the Classic Underbed Drawers.

How long does it take to assemble and disassemble the Essential Bed?

Once you remove the pieces from the packaging, the Essential Bed can be assembled in approximately 5 minutes by one person. No tools are needed for set-up.

Do I need a box spring?

While you can use a box spring with the Essential Bed, we highly recommend against it. The slats are perfectly spaced at just under 3" apart to evenly hold up your mattress while providing optimum support and breathability.

What color is the Essential Bed?

The Essential Bed is available in four premium finishes—Walnut, Natural, Espresso, and Grey. Because we use 100% real wood, you can expect unique grains and slight color variation. These subtle imperfections are indicative of authentic wood, and should be celebrated. The color will appear slightly warmer in artificial lighting, cooler in natural lighting, and darker in dim lighting.

How strong is the Essential Bed?

Very strong! The Essential Bed doesn’t squeak or creak, and has a weight capacity of 1,000 lbs including the mattress.

Will the Essential Bed work with my mattress?

Yes. The Essential Bed has been designed to work with all mattresses, including foam, bed-in-a-box, spring, hybrids, and traditional mattresses. The slats are spaced for optimal support and breathability. All mattress thicknesses will work with the Essential Bed, with taller mattresses covering up more of the Pillowboard, and shorter mattresses creating a more accentuated design element. We use a 9" H mattress for our in-house photography of the Essential Bed.

Does the Essential Bed work with the Pillowboard?

Yes. Like the Classic Bed, the Essential Bed is compatible with the Pillowboard. The Pillowboard is an innovative headboard-pillow hybrid that provides pro-lounge comfort and aesthetic versatility. It fits perfectly between your mattress and wall (or any flat surface behind your bed). It’s a modern alternative to a more traditional headboard, providing a simple, minimal look and a stable but soft place to lean back and stack pillows against. It’s not attached to the frame, but when used correctly it’s designed to stay in place, while being easily removable. Pillowboard Covers can be washed and interchanged, as desired. The Pillowboard can also accommodate any extrusions (like walls, molding, and window sills) up to 3" in size without any problems.
